After completion of this course delegates will be able to:

  • Determine the specific safety rules and steps associated with the erection of Tube & Clamp Scaffolding.
  • Determine the specific safety rules and steps involved in the safe erection of System Scaffolding
  • Identify the major items to consider when performing a scaffold inspection
  • Specify the major elements of OSHA’s Regulation 29 CFR Subpart LScaffolding

Scaffolding Competent Person Course is a 2 day course, with the initial day focusing on the requirements for frame, tube and clamp and system scaffolding

The following topics to be covered:

  • Recognizes hazards associated with each type of scaffold
  • Proper procedures to minimize and control those hazards
  • The nature and importance of any electrical hazards, fall hazards and falling objects hazards
  • The correct procedures in dealing with nearby electrical equipment and or power lines, proper protection systems erection for co-worker safety
  • Proper handling of materials on scaffolds and proper scaffold use
  • Maximum loading of scaffolds and scaffold capacities
  • Supervising the erection, repairing, and inspection of scaffold systems
  • Identification of various scaffold check points & safety considerations
  • Correct procedures for moving, disassembling, repairing and erecting scaffolds
  • Chaining worksite conditions as they pertain to scaffolds
  • Quality and professionalism in scaffold construction, repairing and inspections

Performance Objectives

  •  Follow OSHA standards when working with scaffolds
    • Define supported scaffolding
    • List training topics required for supported scaffolding
    • List a scaffold expert's responsibilities.
  • Safely access supported scaffolding
    • List safe access methods
    • Select the most common access methods
    • Recall the need to extend ladders 3 feet above the top of the platform they are leaning against
    • Describe the three-point climb
    • Identify the maximum ramp slope angle allowed by OSHA
    • Agree that ramps or walkways above 6 feet from the ground must have guardrails
    • Define a stairway tower
    • Agree to inspect access daily
    • Recognize the danger of climbing a cross brace
  • Work safely around and on scaffolds
    • List good housekeeping techniques
    • Identify toeboard requirements
    • Describe debris nets
    • Recall what to do when there is a danger of extremely heavy objects falling
    • Agree to wear a hard hat at construction sites for protection from falling objects
  • Use safety techniques to avoid falling from scaffolds
    • State the height at which OSHA requires fall protection
    • Select the distance above walking surfaces that requires guardrails
    • Describe how a lifeline works
    • Identify the scaffold expert as the person who decides whether or not to use PFAs when erecting or dismantling scaffolds
  • Properly assemble supported scaffolding
    • Define the Maximum Intended Load
    • Identify the purpose of screw jacks
    • Explain why screw jacks are set at least one inch from the lowest setting
    • Identify the purpose of using mud sills
    • Recall the danger of using alternative materials as mud sills
    • Determine when it is acceptable to mix scaffolding parts

The course is primarily focussed to teach essential skills with hands on practice for scaffolders, scaffolding supervisors, foremen, safety officers, safety engineers & all the relevant personnel who are required to work with & around scaffolding operations
