Credible Qualification
Level 5 NVQ Diploma

The City & Guilds Level 5 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is a standard qualification for people who are working in the area of health and safety practice. The qualification is suitable for people who work in all industry sectors and ideal if you are responsible for developing and applying health and safety procedures day-to-day in your or someone else’s organisation. The City & Guilds Level 5 NVQ Diploma is equivalent to the NEBOSH Diploma.

The Level 5 NVQ Diploma is a work-based qualification that recognises a person's competence from workplace performance assessment, rather than relying on teaching and examinations.

The qualification needs the collection of evidence from your day-to-day health and safety work activities. This process does not want you to be away from your workplace for long periods and any time spent with your assessor is spread over the period it takes you to complete the qualification, this is essentially a distance learning approach to gain a qualification.

You might already have some experience and may have attained a  City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Certificate or NEBOSH International General Certificate. Candidates who prefer to be analysed by examinations should consider the NEBOSH International Diploma.

The City & Guilds Level 5 NVQ Diploma is recognised as meeting the requirements for Graduate membership (Grad IOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH –www.iosh.co.uk), providing a progression path to Chartered membership of IOSH (CMIOSH). It is also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management ((IIRSM – www.iirsm.org) as meeting the academic requirements for full membership (MIIRSM).

Eligibility

Other than a requirement that candidates must be 19 years old at the time of initial registration City and Guilds have not set entry requirements for this qualification. TUTIS - SHE KNOWS Academy has to assess candidates to identify they have the potential and opportunity to gain the qualification successfully.

As the qualification is work-based, involving development/implementation activities and collection of evidence the candidate must be in a position where they can provide this. You must be able to comment on and influence health and safety in the organisation that you work in. As the work-based activities require knowledge of health and safety it is advisable that you have attained a NEBOSH International General Certificate or similar.

Your programme begins with an induction and assessment, where we explain the assessment criteria, and develop an action plan to take you to completion of the qualification.

Scheduled induction sessions are arranged throughout the year.

Course Material

Course materials including qualification handbook, assessment criteria and assessment plan are provided electronically by TUTIS-SHE KNOWS.

Depending on your experience you may need to develop your understanding in order to do some of the NVQ activities effectively. This can be done by using appropriate reference books. They reflect the knowledge requirements that candidates will use to fulfil the workplace performance criteria of the Diploma and would make essential reading for candidates that are just starting formal health and safety studies. They provide abridged and contextual reference to legislation and contain supporting illustrations, photographs of workplaces and sample forms.

Assessment

There are no examinations with this qualification and it is therefore not possible to fail, candidates are either “competent” or “not yet competent”. The assessment team monitor your progress to offer support and guidance throughout the qualification. Assessment of performance is made by consideration of the results of work-based activities to meet each unit’s assessment criteria.

In particular you will produce a personal portfolio demonstrating understanding and application of the assessment criteria. Your assessor will determine the extent to which your evidence confirms completion of the criteria. Feedback is provided and work to meet the criteria can be re-submitted until completion.

Our e-portfolio scheme is available, which enables easy communication between candidates and assessors and allows you to provide evidence from anywhere at anytime 24/7, with no bulky paper-based portfolios to manage, store or send through the post.

Additional One-To-One Support

Five one-to-one mentor support sessions over a 12 month period are available to provide additional personal guidance on what and how you can develop and gather evidence of your successful completion of your NVQ activities. Your mentor gets to know you and your organisation and can provide a valuable link to completion of the qualification efficiently.
